May 14, 2012

After remaining dormant for 3 months, talks of Greece exiting the European Union has returned in full force. These talks come on the heels of the election of anti-austerity leadership in Greece. In Spain, concerns are growing as the fourth largest Spanish bank was nationalized last week after mounting losses. The Spanish 10yr has come under pressure as rates have risen 140bps since March 1. As these concerns continue, the flight to quality remains US and German debt.

The 10yr UST closed below 1.85 on Friday and is below 1.80 early this morning. JP Morgan's $2B “hedging” loss announced last week is significant, but pales in comparison to news in Europe.

There is a light economic calendar this week, and no auctions. European headlines will once again continue drive the market.
